Audra McDonald is unparalleled in her range and the versatility of her talents as acting and singing. Audra McDonald who has won the prestigious six Tony Awards in a row and two Grammy Awards in 2015 was recognized as one of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential people. The president Barack Obama also awarded her the National Medal of Arts -the highest honor in America for excellence in this area. She is equally at home with television, film and Broadway. The enthralling soprano of her voice is a perfect fit for the stage. Her professional career is a success in concert and recording, appearing regularly at some of the most sought-after performances around the globe. McDonald was born in Fresno California, where she was raised by a large family full of musicians. While at the Juilliard School in New York City, McDonald received training as an opera singer. After graduating, she was awarded the first Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured actress in an Musical for Carousel at Lincoln Center Theater (1994). The next four-year period the actress was awarded two additional Tony Awards as a featured actress for her roles of Terrence Mcnally's Broadway debuts Master Class (1996) and Ragtime (1998) that gave her a total of 3 Tony Awards at the age of just thirty. In 2004 she was in the running for her fourth Tony Award, starring in A Raisin in the Sun with Sean Diddy Combs. And the year 2012 was when her five-year-old daughter received her first Tony Award in the category of Leading Actress when she was the main character for the musical The Gershwins Porgy and Bess. In 2014, she created Broadway history and became the Tony Awards most decorated performer in the sixth Tony Award for her performance in Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill the role that also served as the stage for her Olivier Award nomination 2017 debut on the London's West End. Not only did she set a record in the number of honors an actor has received, she also became the first to have won all four categories. Some of her theater credits includes The Secret Garden (1993) Marie Christine (99) Henry IV (2005) 110 in the Shade (2006) Twelfth Nacht (2009) the latter of which was the Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park debut, Shuffle Along or The Making of the Musical sensation of 1921 & All That Followed (2017) Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune (2018) as well as Ohio State Murders 2023. McDonald was first introduced to the television audience as a dramatic actor in Peabody Award winning CBS's Having Our Say:"The Delany Sisters first 100 years. The actress then starred with Kathy Bates and Victor Garber in the highly acclaimed 1999 remake by ABC and Disney of Annie as well as in 2000, she had a recurring role on NBC's popular series Law & Order Special Victims Unit. The following year, she received her first Emmy nomination for her performance in the HBO film adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning show Wit produced by Mike Nichols and starring Emma Thompson McDonald returned on television network in 2003 with the drama about politics Mister Sterling, produced by Emmy Award winner Lawrence O'Donnell Jr. and with Josh Brolin. She joined the WB The Bedford Diaries The Bedford Diaries in early in the year. Following the season, she was an NBC TV show Kidnapped. In 2016, McDonald was nominated for her fourth Emmy Award for her appearance in HBO's Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill, a film-special. The Bite is a drama with six episodes based on a pandemic, coproduced with Spectrum Originals & CBS Studios. McDonald starred alongside Taylor Schilling & Steven Pasquale. The actress first appeared as U.S. attorney Liz Lawrence in 2009 on CBS's civil show The Good Wife in 2018 McDonald returned to her character (now named Liz Reddick) as a regular in the season premiere of The Good Fight on Paramount+ and received 3 Critics Choice Award nominations for her role. She currently guest-stars in Julian Fellowes's historical thriller The Gilded Age on HBO.
